Deafblindness and hearing and visual impairment

In their daily life deafblind people suffer from the serious consequences of their dual sensory impairment and have to cope with them. Typical problems of deafblind people are:

  • Finding their way around is very hard.
  • Interpersonal communication is severely limited.
  • Access to information (knowing what is going on in the immediate and wider surroundings) is very difficult.

These three difficulties are characteristic of deafblindness. Therefore, the SNAB supports the view that this handicap must not be considered the sum of blindness and deafness, but should be treated as a unique handicap with specific characteristics.
